A kneecap is a formed metal trim piece that covers the exposed top edge of a corrugated or ribbed metal panel after it has been cut and bent to fit around a corner or obstruction. It serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose: it protects the sharp, cut edges of the panel from weather infiltration and mechanical damage, while creating a finished appearance on exterior wall systems, roof panels, and siding installations.
The piece itself is typically stamped or roll-formed from galvanized steel, aluminum, or stainless steel to match the panel profile it covers. A kneecap takes the shape of an inverted V or peaked roof, with each leg sized to sit flush against the two faces of the bent panel. The inside dimensions must closely match the panel rib height and width, usually ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 inches across the valley. Fastening is done through pre-drilled holes into the panel itself or into the underlying structure, using stainless steel or painted fasteners to prevent corrosion and staining.
Kneecaps become necessary whenever a panel run terminates abruptly or bends around an edge. Common locations include the top of a gable wall, around roof penetrations such as exhaust pipes or ridge caps, and at inside or outside corners where two panel planes meet. Without a kneecap, water and debris collect in the exposed rib cavity, eventually causing rust streaking, structural corrosion, and water intrusion into the building envelope.
Common failure modes and installation pitfalls
The most frequent problem is poor fit due to panel deflection or out-of-square installation. If the panels curve or the bend is not true, the kneecap sits proud and rocks under wind load, breaking the weather seal and fasteners. Undersized fasteners or inadequate fastener spacing (typically 12 to 16 inches) allows the trim to move independently of the panel. Caulking sealed under a loose kneecap will eventually tear and fail. Thermal expansion differences between aluminum trim and steel panels, or between trim and sealant, require deliberate spacing and flexible joint design to prevent buckling or separation in seasonal climates.
The term kneecap itself derives from the visual analogy: the peaked profile resembles a kneecap when viewed in section. In the wider context of metal building systems and architectural metal work, kneecaps sit alongside similar trim pieces such as ridge caps, eave closure strips, and panel splice covers. Proper specification and installation of these trim components are essential to long-term durability and are often overlooked in budget estimating, leading to costly field repairs and warranty claims.
