A kneepiece is a curved or angular block of timber, usually hardwood, fitted into the angle formed where two roof timbers meet, typically at the junction of a rafter and a tie beam or collar tie. Its job is simple: to stiffen that joint against the outward thrust and flexing that occurs under roof load, snow accumulation, or wind pressure.

The piece works by spreading stress across a wider area of both timbers. A roof joint under tension or shear will fail if the two members are merely nailed or bolted end-to-end. A kneepiece, cut to fit snugly into the corner with its grain running perpendicular to the bisector of that angle, acts as a mechanical lock. The wood itself becomes part of the load path, transferring force across the joint rather than concentrating it at fastener holes.

Kneepieces vary in shape and construction method. Traditional forms are simply shaped from solid timber, often with one curved face that mirrors the angle of the joint for better bearing. Industrial versions may be fabricated as steel or cast iron brackets for heavy roof trusses. The size depends on the roof span and load class; a small domestic roof might use a 50 mm square kneepiece, while a barn or factory roof may call for sections 150 mm or larger. Grain direction matters: wood must run along the depth of the piece, not across it, to resist splitting.

Installation requires careful fitting. The kneepiece must sit flat against both timbers with no daylight gaps, since loose contact defeats its purpose. Poor fitting, knots that create weak spots, or use of brittle timber leads to splitting or crushing under peak load. Moisture movement in timber can also open the joint over time if fastening methods do not account for seasonal wood movement.

The term reflects the carpenter's eye: the piece sits at the knee of the angle, much as a human knee joint locks the leg at its bend. Kneepieces are most visible in traditional timber roof construction and are still common in renovation and heritage work, though modern engineered timber trusses tend to use plywood gusset plates or steel brackets instead. Understanding their role matters for anyone assessing or repairing old roof structures, as a failed kneepiece often signals imminent failure of the entire truss system.
