A knife pleat is a tailored fold in fabric where the crease runs parallel to the selvedge, with all pleats facing the same direction. Unlike box pleats or inverted pleats that pair two folds back-to-back, a knife pleat uses only one fold per pleat line, creating a sharp edge that points consistently across the garment. Each pleat comprises three layers: the folded edge on top, the hidden underneath layer, and the base fabric, all pressed firmly into permanent shape.
The term arises from the appearance: the crease resembles the edge of a blade, thin and decisive. This is precisely what happens during manufacture. The fabric is marked with pleat lines (typically 0.75 to 1.5 inches apart depending on design), then folded manually or mechanically so all folds face one direction. The garment is then placed in a steam press or continuous heat-setting machine where the crease is locked in permanently. Temperature and dwell time vary by fiber content: synthetic blends may require 15 to 20 seconds at 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, while wool demands gentler treatment around 250 to 280 degrees.
Knife pleats are standard in formal skirts, kilts, school uniforms, and ceremonial garments because they hold their shape through wear and washing. They demand careful pattern grading because the pleat allowance must be calculated into width measurements: a skirt with twelve knife pleats needs significant extra yardage at the cutting stage, typically 20 to 30 percent more fabric than the finished width. The underside of each pleat often shows the pleat allowance fabric folded underneath, which is why knife-pleated garments often feature hems or linings that cover this internal structure.
Press retention and fiber selection
The permanence of a knife pleat depends heavily on fiber content. Polyester and polyester-blend fabrics hold set pleats reliably because the thermoplastic fibers soften and lock shape when heated. Pure wool takes a set well through steam but is more prone to relaxation if exposed to high humidity or repeated flexing at the fold line. Cotton and linen require chemical treatment (resin finish) to maintain pleat memory, which creates durability trade-offs: the finish can stiffen hand feel and reduce breathability. Blended fabrics typically perform best, balancing cost, appearance, and pleat retention.
In production, the pressure applied during pressing is critical. Insufficient pressure leaves the pleat fuzzy and imprecise; excessive pressure can create shine or burnishing, especially on synthetic fabrics. Industrial plants often use programmable vacuum or air-assisted presses that apply graduated pressure across the width. After pressing, the garment must cool fully before handling to set the memory, which is why knife-pleated garments are stacked or suspended without folding while cooling on production lines.
