Flax cotton is the short fiber fraction recovered during the breaking and hackling of flax stalks, separated from the long line fiber used in linen production. When flax plants are retted (soaked to break down pectins), broken mechanically, and then hackling removes the woody core, short fibers drop away as tow. This tow can be carded and spun into yarn using cotton spinning systems, producing a fiber that behaves more like cotton than like the stiffer long flax used for traditional linen weaving.

The preparation method differs significantly from true linen. Where line fiber is combed into parallel strands before spinning, flax cotton tow is carded into a web, much as cotton is processed. This creates a yarn with a nubby, irregular appearance quite different from smooth linen thread. The fibers are typically 1 to 10 millimeters long, compared to line fibers that may exceed 100 millimeters. This shorter length makes them unsuitable for fine woven linens but adequate for coarser textiles, twines, and blended fabrics.

Bleaching flax cotton follows cotton protocols rather than linen protocols. Alkaline soda ash treatment, hydrogen peroxide, or chlorine-based processes remove residual impurities and lignin. The fiber accepts bleach readily because the primary obstacle, pectins, have already been removed during retting. Temperature, pH, and time must be carefully managed: excessive bleaching weakens the cellulose structure, reducing yarn tenacity and creating brittle fabric.

Processing challenges and applications

Flax cotton production is economically driven by waste reduction. Since line fiber commands higher prices for linen weaving, tow recovery turns a byproduct into saleable material. Quality depends heavily on retting conditions and hackling thoroughness. Over-retted fiber becomes weak and sticky; under-retted material retains stem fragments that clog carding equipment and create weak points in yarn.

The fiber finds use in low-to-medium count yarns for canvas, sacking, and unbleached industrial fabrics. Blended yarns mixing flax cotton with true cotton or synthetic fibers improve handling and reduce cost. The name reflects its dual nature: it is flax in origin but treated and spun using cotton machinery and techniques, sitting between traditional line fiber and commercial cotton in the textile hierarchy.
