knock down: extinguish or suppress an active fire

To knock down a fire means to reduce its intensity or extinguish it rapidly, usually by applying water, foam, dry chemical, or dirt to the flames and hot surfaces. In industrial settings, this is the immediate tactical response when a fire breaks out in a process area, storage yard, or equipment enclosure. The goal is to lower the heat release rate enough that the fire stops spreading and can be controlled or fully extinguished.

Water is the most common knockdown agent on industrial sites. A heavy stream from a hose or monitor gun cools both the fuel and the flames; the water absorbs heat and, in some cases, the steam it generates displaces oxygen around the fire. Dry chemical powder works differently, interrupting the chemical chain reaction of combustion. Foam suppresses vapors and cools the surface of flammable liquids. Dirt or sand knockdown is used when water would be ineffective or dangerous, such as in metal fires or certain electrical emergencies.

Knockdown versus extinguishment

These terms are not identical. Knockdown is partial suppression: flames die back, heat output drops, and the immediate threat recedes. Extinguishment is complete. A fire can be knocked down successfully but then reignite if the underlying fuel or heat source is not removed. This distinction matters in incident reporting: knockdown time indicates crew response speed, but extinguishment time reflects total incident duration.

Industrial knockdown procedures vary by hazard class. Hydrocarbon fires in tank farms require application rates measured in gallons per minute per square foot of burning surface; applying too little water spreads the fire instead of suppressing it. Electrical cabinet fires call for non-conductive agents and power disconnection before water knockdown. Metal fires (magnesium, aluminum, lithium) resist water and may require Class D dry powder; water on burning metal produces hydrogen gas and violent reactions.

The term knockdown appears in emergency response plans, fire brigades, and HAZMAT protocols. It is distinct from "suppression," which implies ongoing control, and from "smothering," which covers the fuel to exclude oxygen. In formal incident command language, knockdown marks the transition from uncontrolled fire to controlled fire; once knockdown is achieved, the incident commander shifts resources toward final extinguishment and overhaul.
