NST: the tapered thread standard for gas and fluid lines

NST stands for National Standard Thread, a tapered thread form used almost exclusively for connecting hoses, couplings, and fittings that carry gas, water, or other fluids in industrial and commercial applications. The thread tapers at a fixed angle of 1 in 16 (about 3.75 degrees), which means the diameter decreases as you move along the axis. This taper allows a seal to form without requiring sealant tape or compound, though many practitioners still apply tape as insurance against leaks.

NST threads are sized by nominal diameter and thread pitch. Common industrial sizes include 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1 1/4 inch, and 2 inch, with pitch typically around 11.5 threads per inch for smaller diameters. The threads are external on male fittings and internal on female fittings. When you screw a male NST connector into a female NST coupling, the tapered surfaces converge and compress tightly against each other, creating a mechanical seal without relying on O-rings or elastomers.

NST differs from other gas-thread standards: NPT (National Pipe Thread), which is more common in plumbing and pneumatic systems, uses a different pitch and angle; BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) has no taper; and fire hose connections often use NST specifically because the simple tapered design withstands high internal pressures and repeated connections. You will encounter NST on portable acetylene bottles, oxygen regulators, propane distribution lines, and compressed air hose assemblies in welding and fabrication shops.

The main failure modes are cross-threading, which damages the delicate thread flanks and causes leaks, and under-tightening, which fails to seat the taper fully. Over-tightening strips the threads, especially on brass fittings or aluminum adapters common in portable equipment. Corrosion, particularly on steel fittings exposed to moisture, makes dis-assembly difficult and can cause the fitting to seize in place.

NST remains entrenched in legacy equipment and portable appliances because its design is cheap to manufacture, requires no additional sealing components, and performs reliably when used correctly. However, many modern industrial installations have migrated to NPT or metric alternatives for standardization across markets, so NST is increasingly confined to specialty gas equipment, older hose systems, and applications where the simplicity of the design is valued over conformity with broader industry standards.
