KPI: the angle that makes steering geometry work
Kingpin inclination is the angle between the steering axis and the vertical plane when viewed from the front of the vehicle. The steering axis is an imaginary line that runs through the center of the upper and lower ball joints (or equivalent pivot points on modern suspensions). KPI is measured in degrees, typically ranging from 6 to 15 degrees depending on vehicle type and design. A larger KPI angle means the steering axis tilts inward at the top.
The geometry matters because KPI works together with caster and camber to control how the wheels respond to steering input and road forces. When you turn the steering wheel, the vehicle wants to recover to straight-ahead; KPI contributes to this self-centering behavior by creating a mechanical advantage. The offset between where the steering axis intersects the ground and the actual tire contact patch is called the scrub radius. Adjusting KPI changes this scrub radius, which affects steering feel, effort, and stability.
Measurement and variation
KPI is typically measured during a wheel alignment procedure using a digital alignment rack. The measurement is taken on both front wheels and should be roughly equal side to side; significant difference between left and right indicates collision damage, worn suspension components, or a bent steering knuckle. Some vehicles allow KPI adjustment through shim kits or eccentric bolts on the upper control arm, though many modern designs fix KPI as part of the suspension architecture and cannot be altered without replacing structural components.
Too much KPI can cause heavy steering effort and increased wear on the outer tire edge during cornering. Too little KPI reduces self-centering and can make the vehicle feel loose or unresponsive. The term comes from the kingpin, an older design element that was literally a large pin around which the front wheel assembly pivoted; modern suspensions use ball joints instead, but the geometric principle remains the same and the name persists in the industry.
