A lace machine is a powered loom that creates openwork fabric by systematically twisting, looping, or knotting threads to form decorative holes and motifs in a single integrated process. Unlike weaving, which interlocks two thread systems at right angles, lace machines generate pattern by controlling the movement of many individual threads or yarns that travel in different directions across the working width, creating voids in the fabric structure that are part of the design itself.
The two principal categories are warp lace machines and bobbin lace machines, reflecting their thread supply systems. Warp lace machines work with threads running lengthwise through the machine (along the direction of production) and use a guide bar mechanism to bend and position them; Raschel and Leavers lace machines are the main industrial warp types. Bobbin lace machines, by contrast, use a grid of bobbins (spools) that hold the working threads and move across the fabric front according to a programmed pattern, crossing and twisting as they pass one another.
Modern lace production relies almost entirely on Raschel machines for commercial output. These use multi-bar guide systems to create designs at production speeds reaching 1,000 courses per minute on widths up to 4 metres. Leavers machines, which operate at slower speeds (200 to 600 courses per minute) but offer finer control and pattern complexity, are now primarily reserved for high-value decorative and bridal laces. Bobbin machines are increasingly rare in industrial settings, though they persist in some European producers for specialty work.
Thread selection and tension are critical variables. Polyester and nylon dominate industrial production, but cotton, silk, and elastane appear in specific end uses. Lower tension improves texture and reduces thread breakage; excessive tension causes pilling and distortion. Pattern defects such as dropped stitches, uneven hole formation, and thread snagging typically result from worn or misaligned guide bars, dull hooks, or incorrect thread lubricant selection.
The name originates from the French lacier (to make lace) and reflects the machine's core purpose: to mechanize what was originally hand-made bobbin or needle lace work. Industrial lace machines emerged in the late 19th century and have since become the primary method for producing trim, insertions, and allover lace for apparel, home textiles, and technical applications including filtration and medical fabrics.
