The lace piece is a longitudinal timber in wooden ship construction that runs along the stem, providing structural support where the bow projects forward. It sits behind the stem itself and locks the forward frames into a rigid assembly, preventing the extreme stresses of wave impact and forward motion from tearing the bow structure apart. In essence, it is the backbone of the stem joint.
The piece runs roughly parallel to the stem from the keel up through the forecastle area. Its grain direction follows the length of the ship rather than crossing it, which gives it strength along the critical axis where bending forces are greatest. The lace piece is typically squared timber, fastened to the frames on either side with trunnels (wooden pegs) or bolts, creating a locked framework that distributes load across many timbers instead of concentrating stress at a single joint.
The lace piece occupies the inside face of the stem assembly. Because the stem itself carries enormous compressive and shear loads during sailing, especially when the bow pitches or hits rough water, the lace piece acts as a tension tie, holding the frame ends securely to the stem structure. Without it, the stem would act as a hinge, allowing flexing that would quickly open seams and compromise the hull.
The term 'lace' refers to the way this timber laces or weaves the forward frame ends together, binding them into a unified beak or head. Older wooden vessels relied on this kind of distributed joinery throughout the hull, where multiple overlapping timbers shared the load rather than a few large pieces bearing it all. The lace piece is one of the few elements whose name directly describes its mechanical function in plain English.
Modern composite and steel vessels have eliminated the need for this timber, but the principle survives in how a bow is reinforced internally. Any shipwright working with wooden hulls, museum restoration, or historical documentation will encounter the lace piece as a defining feature of traditional stem construction.
