A landing strip is a prepared surface, typically 1,500 to 3,000 feet long, designed to allow aircraft to touch down, roll out, and come to a stop. Unlike a full airport runway, a landing strip requires minimal infrastructure: no permanent terminal, no control tower, sometimes no paved surface. It can be asphalt, concrete, gravel, or even compacted earth, depending on aircraft weight and local conditions. The term covers everything from a 2,000-foot grass field in rural farmland to a prefabricated military airfield assembled in weeks.

Landing strips serve specific operational needs where a full airport is impractical or unnecessary. Remote mining operations, island communities, emergency airlift sites, and military forward bases all depend on strips rather than runways. A light aircraft like a Cessna 206 needs only 1,000 feet to land safely; a twin-engine turboprop requires roughly 2,500 feet on a firm surface. The critical variables are surface condition, length, width (typically 30 to 60 feet for general aviation), and load-bearing capacity measured in pounds per square inch.

Surface failures and maintenance

The most common problem is surface degradation. Unpaved strips develop ruts, washboard texture, and potholes from repeated landings, especially when wet or during freeze-thaw cycles. Asphalt strips crack under ultraviolet exposure and inadequate drainage. Military landing zones use sometimes-recycled aluminum matting or perforated steel plates laid over geotextile fabric, which requires constant repositioning as aircraft weight shifts sections. Vegetation encroachment is relentless in humid climates, making regular mowing essential.

Drainage and grading determine how long a strip remains usable. Water pooling indicates failed subsurface preparation or compaction. A properly constructed strip has a crowned profile (higher at the center) with side ditches to shed water. Unprepared surfaces often lack this, turning into mud during rain. Foreign object damage, or FOD, poses a serious hazard: stones, metal fragments, and debris get kicked up by wheels and propellers, damaging aircraft systems and engines.

The term landing strip itself reflects its secondary status in aviation hierarchy. A runway belongs to a certified airport with full operational infrastructure; a strip is what you use when a runway is unavailable or when building a runway is uneconomical. Military doctrine distinguishes between prepared strips (graded and drained) and unprepared ones (natural surface). Maintenance documentation often uses the term interchangeably with auxiliary airfield or simply field, though precision matters when calculating aircraft performance or authorization limits.
