A piece of material at the beginning or end of a reel or roll to allow the material to be threaded or fed onto something, as a reel of film onto a projector or a roll of paper onto a rotary printing press.

A leader is a length of material attached to or wound ahead of the actual product on a reel or roll, serving as a buffer zone during setup and threading. In rotary printing, the leader is typically plain paper of the same width and weight as the job stock, wound onto the mandrel before the printed material begins. Its sole purpose is to be fed through the press, registration system, and delivery without carrying any print value.
Leaders exist because presses need time to synchronize. When you thread a roll onto a rotary press, the first several feet will encounter varying tension, inconsistent ink transfer, and misaligned registration while the press operator adjusts web tension, ink density, and plate-to-roller nip. Running printed product through this setup window guarantees waste and customer complaints. A leader, often 10 to 50 feet depending on press size and complexity, absorbs this wrinkle-out period. Once registration is locked and the press is running cleanly, the operator splices the live job material to the tail of the leader and sends it downweb.
Film and tape applications use leaders differently. In cinematography, a white or numbered leader precedes the feature, allowing the projectionist to thread, focus, and confirm sound sync before the main content rolls. In magnetic tape and film scanning, leaders provide material for the transport mechanism to grip and tension before reaching recorded content. A 35 mm film leader is typically 18 inches long; tape leaders vary from 2 to 10 feet. These leaders protect against damage and give the playback system a chance to stabilize.
The junction between leader and live product is a splice: either a tape splice for film and tape, or a glued or stitched web splice for paper rolls. This splice must pass cleanly through all mechanical systems without tearing, bunching, or shedding adhesive. In high-speed web presses running at 1000+ feet per minute, a weak splice is a press stop. Leaders are scrap; they carry no saleable content and are trimmed and recycled after each run. On a 50-foot leader at 54-inch width, a single job consumes roughly 150 pounds of waste paper before the first saleable inch prints.
Leader waste is a cost driver in short-run and frequent-changeover shops. Each job requires its own leader, and each leader is pure overhead. Long-run jobs amortize this cost across higher yardage; short runs feel the sting acutely. Some operations reuse partial leaders between similar jobs to reduce waste, though this requires identical web width and weight. Film and tape leaders are reused across many passes; only the consumable adhesive on splices is replaced.
The term itself derives from the verb 'to lead', reflecting the leader's role as the advance guard that prepares the way. In printing trades, the leader is so standard that its cost is baked into setup charges and waste factors on every quotation. Operators speak of 'running off the leader' or 'splicing in live' as routine steps in the press start routine, and its presence is so expected that its absence, when someone forgets to wind it on, stops work immediately.
