LF: how contractors measure length by the foot
Linear feet, or LF, is the standard unit for measuring the length of materials sold or installed in single-dimension runs. Unlike square feet or cubic feet, LF counts only the distance along one axis, making it the natural measure for anything stretched out in a line: pipe, cable, trim, lumber, roofing membrane, foundation wall, or electrical conduit. A 50 LF order of half-inch copper tubing means 50 feet of that pipe, regardless of how much floor space it eventually covers.
The term exists because many building materials come in continuous rolls, coils, or stock lengths that are priced and ordered by how much length you need rather than by area or weight. Steel reinforcement bar, weatherstripping, gutter, rope caulk, and linoleum all trade in linear feet. Contractors calculate LF requirements by measuring the route the material will travel, accounting for runs, bends, connections, and waste. A crew installing baseboards in a 2000 square foot house might specify 400 LF of material after accounting for doorways and corners.
The distinction matters because pricing varies sharply by the linear foot. A supplier might quote copper tubing at dollars per LF, and doubling your order doubles your cost directly, whereas area-based pricing creates different math entirely. Estimators must be precise: ordering 10 percent extra LF of expensive materials such as electrical cable or PVC trim adds measurable cost to a job.
LF appears on takeoffs, purchase orders, and delivery tickets as shorthand. It avoids confusion with other abbreviations: LB for pound, SQ for square feet, or CY for cubic yard. On a blueprint, a notation like 240 LF 4-inch drain tile tells a contractor exactly what to order and where it goes. The abbreviation is so standard that specification sheets rarely spell out the words anymore.
