LFM: how wet the vegetation actually is

Live fuel moisture is the water content present in living vegetation, measured as a percentage of the dry weight of that plant material. A fresh green branch might be 120% LFM; the same branch completely dried out would be 0% LFM. In wildfire management and structural safety planning, LFM is one of the strongest predictors of how easily vegetation will ignite and burn. It matters more than the species of plant or the ambient air temperature.

LFM varies dramatically by season, geography, and recent rainfall. In Mediterranean climates, live fuels can drop to 50% moisture or lower during extended droughts, making brush and forests transition from resistant to explosive in flammability terms. Conversely, heavy spring rains can push LFM to 150% or higher, making the same landscape nearly impossible to burn. The critical threshold for rapid fire spread typically falls between 60% and 100% LFM, depending on plant species and fuel arrangement.

Measurement and application

LFM is measured in the field by cutting fresh plant samples, weighing them wet, drying them completely in an oven at around 60 to 70 degrees Celsius for 24 to 48 hours, then reweighing. The calculation is simple: (wet weight minus dry weight) divided by dry weight, times 100. Wildfire agencies and insurance companies use regional LFM data to set burn restrictions and fire danger ratings. In interface zones where homes border wild vegetation, LFM forecasts drive evacuation readiness and fuel treatment decisions.

The term specifically refers to living plant tissue, not dead wood or needle litter on the ground. Dead fuels dry rapidly and are tracked separately as moisture content. This distinction matters because live vegetation resists combustion through evaporative cooling as long as its cells retain water. Once LFM drops below a critical point for a given fuel type, that resistance collapses quickly, and fire behavior shifts from containable to dangerous.

LFM data feeds into fire behavior models alongside wind speed, slope, and fuel load. Agencies like the U.S. Forest Service incorporate LFM estimates into national fire danger indices. Because direct sampling is labor intensive and lagged, satellite-based vegetation indices and seasonal models are increasingly used to estimate LFM across large regions, though field samples remain the ground truth for validation and calibration.
