In rail operations, a light locomotive or train is one moving without revenue cargo, freight cars, or passenger equipment attached. A light engine may pull only a caboose, or none at all. The term describes the operational state, not the physical weight of the locomotive itself, which remains constant.
Light running occurs regularly throughout railway operations. Locomotives deadhead between yards, terminals, or maintenance facilities. A light engine might return from a delivery point to pick up another load, or move to a servicing depot for inspection and fuel. In freight operations, this movement is necessary but generates no income, so dispatchers minimize light running whenever possible by arranging pickups and deliveries efficiently.
Distinctions and priorities
Light engines have lower operational priority than loaded trains on single-track sections. Freight trains and passenger services yield for oncoming traffic, but light engines typically move to sidings first to clear the main line. This priority system reflects the economics of rail transport: revenue-earning trains should not be delayed for empty movements.
The distinction matters for fuel consumption and scheduling. A light locomotive uses less fuel per mile than one hauling loaded cars, but the cost of operating it at all is unrecoverable unless the engine reaches a position where it can be productively loaded. Modern dispatching systems factor light running into route optimization, sometimes combining light moves with maintenance windows or strategic positioning.
The term light also appears in the phrase light loco or light engine, used both in North American and British rail practice. It has been standard terminology for over a century, originating from the simple observation that an unloaded train places less demand on motive power and track infrastructure than a loaded one.
