A cab forward is a steam locomotive with its driving cab positioned ahead of the boiler, rather than behind it as in conventional designs. This unusual arrangement placed the engineer and fireman at the front of the machine, directly above or just behind the smokebox, giving them an unobstructed view down the track. The design was developed primarily for the Southern Pacific Railroad, which operated the largest fleet of these machines, totaling around 250 locomotives between 1910 and the 1950s.

The cab forward configuration was engineered to solve a specific problem on mountain grades in the Sierra Nevada and other high desert routes. Conventional locomotives pulling long freight trains through tunnels and snow sheds filled these spaces with smoke and steam, blinding the crew. By moving the cab forward and extending the boiler to its rear, designers created a clearer sight line and reduced smoke ingestion into the cabin. The design also improved the engineer's ability to observe track conditions and signals on mountainous terrain.

Mechanical demands and construction

Cab forwards were invariably articulated locomotives, meaning the boiler rode on two sets of driving wheels connected by a pivot joint. This allowed the long, heavy machine to navigate sharp curves. Southern Pacific's AC-series cab forwards, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works and other manufacturers, used oil fuel rather than coal, which made the forward cab placement more practical since no coal bunker needed to extend behind the boiler. These machines typically weighed 200 to 250 tons and produced power in the 3,500 to 6,000 horsepower range depending on the specific class.

The configuration created engineering challenges. The boiler extended unusually far to the rear, sometimes with a trailing truck rather than just a tender, to support its weight and length. Visibility improvements came with trade-offs: the cab sat higher and narrower than conventional designs, and maintenance access to the boiler's rear was more difficult. The arrangement also moved the center of gravity forward, affecting braking balance and requiring careful design of coupling systems.

Cab forwards remained almost exclusively a Southern Pacific phenomenon. A handful of other railroads experimented with the design, but none matched Southern Pacific's commitment to the type. As diesel-electric locomotives replaced steam power through the 1950s, cab forwards disappeared; the last Southern Pacific cab forward was retired in 1958. Their specialized design, purpose-built for specific mountain operations, made them uneconomical to convert or repurpose once their intended service ended.
