A kind of passenger railway in urban and suburban settings typically characterized by a mixture of tram (or in North America streetcar) and metro features, crossing streets at grade crossings and normally powered by electricity.

Light rail is a passenger railway system that operates in mixed traffic environments, running on fixed tracks at street level and also on exclusive rights of way, depending on the corridor. Trains typically carry 100 to 300 passengers per vehicle, with consist lengths of two to four cars. The system bridges the gap between surface streetcars and underground metros, offering faster service than buses while costing far less to build and operate than full-grade-separated rapid transit.

Most light rail systems use 750-volt DC third-rail or overhead catenary power, though some modern systems use 25 kV AC supplied overhead. Wheels are steel on steel rails, typically weighing 40 to 60 kilograms per metre. Vehicles range from 30 to 40 metres long for single articulated units, with modern systems often deploying articulated or double-articulated trains to increase capacity. Stations are modest, platform heights typically 200 to 350 millimetres above rail level, suited to fast passenger boarding from street level.

The defining operational characteristic is grade separation handling: light rail crosses streets at signals, shares road space with cars and pedestrians, yet achieves 40 to 80 kilometres per hour operating speeds through grade-separated sections on embankments, viaducts, or reserved medians. This flexibility makes it suitable for corridors where full segregation is too expensive or space is constrained. Acceleration is typically 1.2 to 1.5 metres per second squared; braking reaches 2 metres per second squared or higher.

Maintenance and operational demands

Light rail systems require specialized maintenance facilities for wheel and rail grinding, pantograph and third-rail contact strip replacement, and electrical system checks. Grade-crossing intersections demand traffic signal coordination and careful monitoring for wheel-rail contamination, as dust and moisture at street level accelerates wear. Operational staff need training distinct from both streetcar and metro work: street-level operation requires different judgment from grade-separated lines, and signalling is often semi-automatic rather than fully controlled.

The term emerged in the 1980s to distinguish upgraded tram systems and new urban rail from both historic streetcars and heavy metro transit. It reflects neither tramway nor metro, but a deliberately engineered middle ground suited to sprawling mid-sized cities and growing corridors in larger urban areas. Cost per kilometre typically runs 15 to 50 million euros depending on civil works intensity; this economy of cost relative to metro, combined with faster service than bus rapid transit, has made light rail the dominant new transit technology in Europe, Asia, and increasingly in North America.
