A light plough is a plough without a moldboard, designed to cut and loosen soil rather than invert it. Both sides of the plough are symmetrical about its line of draft, which means it can work equally well in either direction across a field. This symmetry distinguishes it from conventional ploughs, which have an asymmetrical moldboard that throws soil consistently to one side. Light ploughs typically consist of a simple coulter or blade, a share (the cutting edge), and handles, mounted on a frame drawn by a single animal or small tractor.

The absence of a moldboard makes the light plough faster to manufacture and easier to maintain than heavier designs. It requires less power to operate, which historically made it suitable for smallholdings and marginal land where draft animals were weak or fuel was scarce. The symmetric design also means a farmer can reverse direction at the end of a furrow without rotating the implement, saving time on narrow plots. These ploughs are still used in subsistence and small-scale farming across Africa, South Asia, and parts of South America.

How it cuts and why it matters

The light plough's share digs into the soil and the coulter slices a furrow, but without a moldboard to roll the soil over, the cut soil strip tumbles forward and breaks apart rather than being buried cleanly. This action aerates the top layers and controls small weeds and stubble, but leaves stones, large roots, and dense turf less well managed than a moldboard plough would. On friable soils and well-worked land, this is acceptable; on heavy clay or newly broken ground, a moldboard plough is more effective.

The two-way symmetry means wear patterns are spread across both working surfaces. A farmer ploughing a strip down the middle of a field can work the soil on the way there and the return journey, halving the number of passes needed compared to a conventional plough that only works one direction. This efficiency, combined with lower draft resistance, keeps the light plough viable in low-input farming systems where fuel costs and labor availability are critical constraints.

Light ploughs are sometimes called scratch ploughs or ards in older literature, though ard is a term applied more broadly to the simplest pointed-stake designs. Modern light ploughs often have forged steel shares and are hitched to small wheeled frames with depth wheels for control, making them more predictable than traditional animal-drawn versions, but they remain fundamentally simple tools designed to do shallow, thorough soil loosening rather than the burial and mixing work of heavier implements.
