A living fence is a continuous barrier of woody plants, typically shrubs or small trees, established in a line to mark property boundaries, contain livestock, or shield crop areas from wind and drift. Unlike wire or board fencing, the structure grows over time and relies on the plants' natural density and eventual height to perform the containment function. The installation cost is lower than solid fencing, though the establishment period can span two to three years before the barrier becomes fully effective.
Living fences are planted in single or multiple rows depending on the intended barrier strength and the space available. Hawthorn, blackthorn, beech, and holly are traditional choices in temperate regions because they grow densely, develop thorns or tough foliage that deters livestock, and tolerate trimming. In tropical and subtropical climates, species such as Glyricidia or Erythrina serve the same purpose. Spacing between plants typically ranges from 30 to 60 centimeters, and regular cutting or trimming during the establishment phase encourages lateral branching and density.
The practical advantages include wildlife habitat creation, soil stabilization on slopes, reduced wind speed (important in arid regions where soil erosion is a primary concern), and gradual replacement without major capital expenditure. However, living fences compete with adjacent crops for water and nutrients, particularly in the first years; they harbor pests and disease in some contexts; and they require ongoing maintenance through pruning and weeding. In grazing systems, animals may browse young trees or erode the fence line by repeated contact.
Living fences remain standard in smallholder farming in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, where capital for wire or concrete is limited and the land is already devoted to tree management. They are also favored in organic and agroforestry systems where the fence line itself produces fodder, fuel wood, or other products harvested during maintenance cuts. In industrialized agriculture, they have largely been displaced by manufactured fencing, but interest has revived in conservation-focused management and hedgerow restoration programs that recognize their role in landscape connectivity and carbon sequestration.
