A livestock unit (LSU) is a standardized measure used to compare the grazing demand of different animal species on the same pasture. One LSU is defined as the daily feed requirement of a 500-kilogram mature cow consuming 2 percent of her body weight in dry matter, which equals 10 kilograms of forage per day. By converting all animals on a farm to LSU equivalents, managers can assess total grazing pressure on land regardless of whether they run cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, or mixed herds.

The LSU system allows direct comparison across species. A mature beef cow equals 1.0 LSU; a dairy cow typically rates 1.3 to 1.4 LSU because of higher milk production demands; a ewe with lamb equals 0.2 LSU; a finishing pig equals 0.2 LSU. These conversions account for both body weight and the intensity of feed consumption. Seasonal factors matter too: grazing demand changes as animals grow, lactate, or prepare for breeding. Young stock and yearlings carry lower LSU values than adults of the same species.

Pasture managers use LSU calculations to determine stocking rate, the number of animals a given area can sustain without degradation. If a 50-hectare paddock can support 50 LSU for a season, the operator might graze 50 beef cows, or 60 ewes with lambs, or 80 goats, or any combination that does not exceed the total. Exceeding this capacity leads to overgrazing, soil compaction, weed invasion, and erosion. Too light a stocking rate fails to control vegetation growth and reduces the efficiency of fencing and water infrastructure.

LSU in practice and policy

Agricultural extension services and environmental regulators often use LSU thresholds to set compliance benchmarks. Pasture-based dairy farms, sheep stations, and beef ranches rely on LSU tables published by national agricultural departments or university research stations. The definitions vary slightly between regions because climate, pasture type, and animal productivity differ. European LSU figures differ from North American ones; Australian grazing calculations use slightly different assumptions. Always reference the local standard for your jurisdiction rather than assuming LSU values transfer between regions.

The LSU is not a measure of individual animal welfare or productivity, only of grazing impact per head. A high-performing dairy cow might produce more milk per day than her LSU weight suggests, yet she still places standard grazing pressure on the land. Conversely, an animal in poor condition consumes less but may still be counted at the same LSU level for planning purposes. The unit is a tool for land management, not animal assessment.
