locomotive: the engine that hauls the train

A locomotive is a powered rail vehicle designed to generate traction and haul passenger coaches or freight wagons over a fixed track. It carries its own prime mover, whether steam engine, diesel engine, or electric motor, and couples to other vehicles through couplers. The locomotive's weight, adhesion to rails, and engine power determine how much load it can move and how quickly.

Steam locomotives dominated railways from the 1830s until the mid-20th century. They burn coal or oil to heat water in a boiler, converting steam pressure into mechanical work through cylinders and pistons. Diesel-electric locomotives, which became standard in most countries after 1950, use a diesel engine to drive an electrical generator or hydraulic transmission that powers traction motors on the wheels. Electric locomotives draw current from overhead catenary or a third rail and use this directly for electric traction motors, offering high efficiency but requiring expensive infrastructure.

Locomotives are classified by their wheel arrangement, expressed as a series of numbers indicating powered and unpowered axles. A 2-8-0 (Consolidation type) has one unpowered leading axle and four powered axles, common for freight work. A 4-6-2 (Pacific type) was a standard express passenger design. Diesel and electric locomotives use simpler alphanumeric codes: a freight diesel might be labeled as a C-C, meaning all six wheels are powered in two powered trucks.

Adhesion and Weight Distribution

The pulling power of a locomotive depends on adhesion, the friction between wheel and rail. Wet rails, sand on the track, and wheel slip all reduce adhesion and limit drawbar pull. Engineers and operators must manage throttle carefully when starting heavy trains to avoid wheel spin. Weight distribution over the axles affects both adhesion and the stress on track; an unevenly loaded locomotive can damage rails or derail.

Common failures include bearing seizure from lack of lubrication, boiler tube leaks on steam locomotives, and traction motor burnout on electric types. Adhesion loss in poor weather forces train crews to request sand application or reduce speed. Regular inspection of couplers, brake systems, and running gear is essential, as a mechanical failure in the locomotive can strand a train or cause unsafe braking behavior.

The term locomotive comes from the Latin locus, meaning place, and motivus, meaning moving, literally a self-moving engine. It distinguishes these powered units from passive wagons and coaches. On heritage railways and in freight operations worldwide, steam, diesel, and electric locomotives still perform their core function: delivering tonnage reliably across distance and terrain.
