Pacific: the 4-6-2 steam locomotive type
A Pacific is a steam locomotive built to the 4-6-2 wheel arrangement, meaning four leading wheels in two axles, six driving wheels in three axles, and two trailing wheels in one axle. This layout emerged in the early 1900s as railways needed machines that could haul passenger trains at sustained speed while maintaining adequate adhesion and tractive effort. The type became standard for express services across North America, Europe, and beyond.
The leading four-wheel truck (or bogie) improved stability and guidance on curves compared to earlier 2-6-2 Mikado types. The trailing truck allowed the firebox to extend behind the driving wheels, creating larger grate area and better steam generation capacity. This geometry was ideal for routes mixing sustained high-speed running with moderate grades. Typical Pacifics weighed 80 to 140 tons and could develop tractive efforts from 30,000 to 50,000 pounds, depending on boiler pressure and cylinder size.
The name originated from the first production class, the Pacific type, which New Zealand Railways introduced on the Wellington-Auckland main line. American builders including Lima, Baldwin, and American Locomotive Company constructed thousands of variants. British railways preferred slightly different proportions, most notably the Great Western's Castle class. Soviet and Japanese railways developed their own Pacific designs optimized for local fuel quality and maintenance conditions.
Performance and deployment
Pacifics dominated passenger services from the 1920s through the 1950s. They could sustain speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour over extended distances without the mechanical complexity of larger types. Water and coal consumption remained manageable, and crews preferred their responsive handling. On routes with tight curvature or severe grades, railways often chose Pacifics over larger Hudsons or Northern types that were harder to keep on the rails.
The Pacific's main weakness was limited power for fast freight on steeply graded lines. Some railways fitted them with booster engines on the trailing truck to raise tractive effort. Others used them in mixed service, pulling lighter expresses by day and faster freight at night. As diesel locomotives arrived in the 1940s and 1950s, Pacific fleets aged rapidly. Most were scrapped by the 1970s, though a few preserved examples still operate on heritage railways.
