LOF: the routine fluid swap that keeps engines alive

An LOF is a service cycle in which a technician drains the engine's used oil, replaces the oil filter element, and refills the crankcase with fresh lubricant. This is one of the most common maintenance tasks in automotive repair, performed at intervals ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 miles depending on the vehicle, driving conditions, and oil specification. The job typically takes 30 minutes to an hour and requires no special tools beyond a wrench, drain plug socket, and an oil filter wrench.

The core work is straightforward: warm the engine to lower oil viscosity, drain the old oil into a pan, unscrew and replace the filter (which traps particulates and oxidized oil byproducts), then fill with the manufacturer's specified grade, usually a multigrade such as 5W-30 or 0W-20. The technician must match the correct filter type for the engine and ensure the new filter's rubber gasket is seated properly to prevent leaks and bypass. Disposal of used oil is regulated; shops collect it in drums for recycling rather than dumping.

Oil degrades over time and mileage. Detergents in the oil become depleted, additives settle out, and combustion byproducts accumulate as sludge. Delaying an LOF beyond the recommended interval increases wear on bearings, pistons, and valve trains because the oil film becomes too thin and dirty to protect metal surfaces. Synthetic oils (polyalphaolefins or esters) extend intervals to 7,500 or even 10,000 miles; conventional mineral oils typically require service at 5,000 miles or less.

The term LOF encompasses these three elements as a bundle because they are always done together; the filter must be replaced each time because a clogged filter cannot trap contaminants effectively. Some modern vehicles use extended-drain intervals and sealed filters designed for the vehicle's life, though this remains uncommon. Shops often bundle LOF with other checks such as fluid top-ups, battery inspection, or belt wear assessment to improve efficiency and customer relationship.

For the technician, LOF work is high-volume and low-margin; shops rely on speed and turnover to make it profitable. However, missed LOF intervals are a leading cause of engine failure claims outside the warranty period, making thorough documentation and customer communication important. The simplicity of the task also makes it a training ground for apprentices before they progress to more complex drivetrain and suspension work.
