The condition of a plant, especially a cereal, that has been flattened in the field or damaged so that it cannot stand upright, as by weather conditions or because the stem is not strong enough to support the plant.

lodging: when crops fall flat before harvest

Lodging occurs when standing crops, particularly cereals like wheat, barley, or rice, collapse and lie flat against the ground. This happens before harvest and renders the crop difficult or impossible to gather mechanically. The plant stem either breaks partway up or the root anchorage fails entirely, leaving the plant prostrate in the field. Once lodged, grain heads may rot, sprout, or become contaminated with soil, causing serious losses in both yield and quality.

The causes divide into two categories: environmental and agronomic. Heavy rain, wind, or hail can physically topple even healthy crops, especially at grain-fill stage when heads are heaviest. More commonly, weak stems cause the problem. Plants grown with excessive nitrogen fertilizer develop soft, elongated stems that cannot support their own weight. Inadequate potassium, poor drainage, compacted soil, or genetic factors also weaken structural integrity. Some varieties lodge more readily than others; modern breeding has selected for stiffer straw in many cereals to combat this.

Lodged crops present harvest problems that vary by severity. Combines and headers perform poorly on flat material; crops may wrap around machinery, reducing ground speed and increasing harvesting losses. Some operators raise cutter bars higher to avoid soil contact, but this leaves stubble and increases header losses. The economic damage extends beyond immediate harvest: lodged grain is harder to dry uniformly, storage risk increases from moisture and mold, and malting barley or brewing wheat may be rejected by buyers due to quality downgrade.

Management strategies focus on prevention rather than recovery. Choice of variety matters significantly; agronomists select cultivars with proven lodging resistance for their region and soil type. Balanced fertilization, particularly adequate potassium, strengthens stems without excessive vegetative growth. Drilling depth, seeding rate, and row spacing influence plant density and competition, which affect stem diameter. Field drainage reduces root rot and waterlogging stress. In some regions, growth regulator chemicals can reduce plant height and stiffen straw, but these add cost and timing complexity.

The term lodging derives from the idea of the plant taking refuge or lying down, as if seeking shelter. It appears in agricultural literature from at least the nineteenth century. Modern crop insurance policies often define specific lodging thresholds, typically above 20 to 30 degrees from vertical, before losses are recognized. Yield loss from lodging can range from minor in light cases to total crop failure in severe events, making it a persistent concern for grain producers worldwide.
