long-grain: grain running the length of the board

Long-grain describes wood where the dominant grain pattern runs parallel to the length of the board or workpiece. When you look at the end grain, the growth rings appear as concentric circles; when you sight along the length, the grain figure forms parallel lines or stripes that align with the board's longest dimension. This is the grain orientation you get when you rip or plane lumber along its length, following the natural growth pattern of the tree.

Long-grain wood exhibits different working properties than cross-grain or short-grain stock. It machines cleanly when the tool cuts in the direction of the grain, producing smooth surfaces with minimal tearout. The grain raises less during planing, and the wood accepts stain and finish more evenly along its length. However, wood movement occurs primarily across the grain width, not along its length, so long-grain boards remain relatively stable in their length dimension but expand and contract slightly with humidity changes perpendicular to the grain.

Practical implications in the shop

Woodworkers prioritize long-grain orientation for frame rails, stretchers, and any component where strength and stability matter. A table leg that is long-grain will not easily split or warp lengthwise, and glue joints along the grain tend to be stronger than joints cut across it. Conversely, tabletops and panels are often constructed of boards arranged with long-grain running the width of the panel to manage seasonal movement predictably.

When planing long-grain wood, you cut with the grain, which means the tool enters the fibers at a low angle and exits cleanly rather than raising them. Direction matters; planing against the grain (downslope) causes tearout even on tools that are sharp and properly set. In hand planing, experienced woodworkers read the grain visually or by feel, then orient the board so the grain slopes away from them as they push the plane forward.

The term contrasts with cross-grain (grain running perpendicular to the board's length) and short-grain (grain running at an angle, typical of figured or highly figured wood). Edge banding and cross-grain blocking are weaker by nature and prone to splintering, so designs that rely on long-grain joinery and orientation are generally more durable than those that don't. Sapwood grain may differ from heartwood in the same piece, so understanding grain direction is essential before selecting stock for visible surfaces.
