Scary sharp is a sharpening method that uses sandpaper instead of traditional whetstones or oilstones to hone plane irons, chisels, and saw blades. The technique involves gluing progressively finer grits of sandpaper to a flat substrate, usually a granite tile or thick glass, then stropping the tool edge across these surfaces much like you would on a whetstone. The method produces a genuinely sharp edge because sandpaper grits, when new, are angular and cut aggressively, and the process leaves no wire edge.
The workflow typically runs through eight or more grit stages. Most woodworkers start at 220 or 320 grit to remove previous damage or dulling, then progress through intermediate grits around 600, 1000, and 2000, finishing at 4000, 5000, or even 8000 grit. Each stage takes only thirty seconds to a minute per tool. The abrasive cuts evenly across the entire bevel, and because the substrate stays perfectly flat, you maintain consistent geometry without the dish or hollows that can develop in worn stones.
The appeal lies in cost and speed. A full set of sandpaper grits costs five to ten dollars, versus fifty to two hundred dollars for quality whetstones. Sandpaper dulls and sheds its coating faster than stone does, so sheets need replacing every few months with regular use, but this is cheap enough that sharpening becomes effortless. The method also requires almost no water or oil maintenance, and the flat surface never needs flattening itself.
When scary sharp works and when it does not
Scary sharp excels for maintaining already-sharp edges and for sharpening plane irons and chisels in normal workshop use. It struggles when tools arrive truly dull or damaged; removing deep nicks or reshaping a rounded bevel takes far longer on sandpaper than on a coarse oilstone because sandpaper loads with metal dust and clogs. Waterstones, by contrast, release swarf naturally and stay aggressive. Scary sharp also performs poorly on very soft metals or on cheap tools with weak temper; the friction generates enough heat that you must work in short bursts to avoid drawing the hardness from the steel.
The term itself is not old. It emerged in woodworking forums and communities in the 1990s and 2000s as the method spread from Japanese and English workshops into the broader North American hobbyist scene. The word scary alludes to how sharp the resulting edge becomes, sharp enough to be genuinely dangerous to handle carelessly. By the 2010s it had settled as standard terminology among hand-tool users, though it remains less common among professional sharpeners and production shops, which tend to rely on bench grinders and whetstones or diamond stones for speed and durability.
