A cutting tool or assembly that consists of a circular head which houses multiple cutting knives or blades arranged in a ring formation.

A ringhead is a rotating cutting tool used in woodworking machinery, typically mounted on a spindle, where multiple knife blades are arranged radially around a circular body. The knives face outward and downward, cutting simultaneously as the head spins. This design allows a single pass to produce a finished surface, commonly used in planers, moulders, and edge-banding machines where speed and surface quality matter.
The circular body, usually made of steel or aluminum alloy, holds between 4 and 12 knives depending on the machine's design and the width of cut required. Each knife sits in a pocket or slot and is locked with a wedge, screw, or quick-change mechanism. Industrial ringheads rotate at speeds between 2,000 and 10,000 rpm; higher speeds on smaller machines produce finer finishes but generate more heat and noise. The knives themselves are typically high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide-tipped, with carbide preferred in production work for its durability and edge retention.
Setting and maintenance
Knife positioning is critical: each blade must be set to precisely the same height relative to the cutting edge at the ring's outer diameter, usually within 0.1 mm, or the output surface will be ridged or uneven. This is done with a setting gauge or jig before installation. Because the knives are in a ring, they leave a slight spiral or helical mark on the workpiece if fed at constant speed; this is generally imperceptible in finished work but visible at high magnification. Dull knives cause burn marks, tear-out, and increased power draw; resharpening or replacement is necessary when finish quality drops.
Ringheads are preferred over profile wheels or shaped cutters for producing straight edges, chamfers, roundovers, and rebates in solid wood. They tolerate minor variations in timber thickness better than fixed-profile tooling because the rotating action and multiple knives average out inconsistencies. Softwoods machine cleanly at higher feeds; dense hardwoods require slower feed rates and sharper knives to avoid burning.
The term ringhead distinguishes this tool from profile wheels (which have a shaped outline) and from single-blade saws. In industrial plants, ringheads are found on four-square planers, edge sanders, and specialized moulding machines. They represent a middle ground between high-speed spindle tooling and large-format toolhead assemblies: simpler than a full spindle unit, more versatile than a single fixed cutter, and fast enough for production runs.
