marshalling: sorting wagons into working trains
Marshalling is the systematic assembly and rearrangement of railway wagons and carriages in a dedicated yard to form trains suited to specific routes and destinations. A marshalling yard is a large, flat-graded installation with multiple parallel sidings, typically equipped with humps, switches, and either gravity or powered movement systems. The core task is breaking down incoming trains into their component wagons, sorting them by destination or service type, and reassembling them into outbound trains that will run as efficient units to their final destinations.
The physical layout of a marshalling yard reflects the work it performs. Arrival sidings receive incoming trains. The hump (or shunting hill) is an artificial incline, usually 3 to 5 metres high, over which wagons are rolled by locomotives or, in modern installations, cable or motor-driven systems. As a wagon crests and descends the hump, its speed is controlled by friction brakes or retarders. Gravity then carries it down into the sorting sidings below, where it is diverted by pointwork into the appropriate line for its destination. Departure sidings hold the newly formed outbound trains until they are ready to depart.
Marshalling yards are classified by the method of wagon movement. Gravity yards rely on the hump to provide motive force; the wagon is released, descends, and is guided by switches into its assigned siding. Flat yards use shunting locomotives to push or pull wagons directly into position. Hump yards are more efficient for large throughputs and are standard in major European and North American rail networks, though they require substantial capital investment and careful wagon weight management. Retarders, either friction or magnetic devices, are fitted at the hump's crest or throat to regulate descent speed and prevent wagons coupling at excessive velocity.
The vocabulary reflects the work's origins and geography. The term marshalling is dominant in British and Commonwealth railways; North American yards often use the term classification yard. The hump itself takes its name from the physical profile. A wagon entering the hump is said to be humped or kicked; one that has passed over the hump and is rolling toward its siding is in the sorting section. Retarders are sometimes called brakes. The shunting locomotive, or pilot engine, is the powered unit that moves wagons onto the hump or performs flat-yard work.
Marshalling yards operate continuously on busy routes, handling dozens of trains daily. Throughput depends on wagon arrival patterns, the yard's design, and operator skill. Inefficiencies arise from unbalanced loadings (heavy and light wagons mixed), incompatible coupling systems, and timing mismatches between inbound and outbound traffic. Modern yards increasingly use computer control to optimise siding allocation and reduce the time wagons spend in the yard, since demurrage (idle time charges) affects both operator and customer. Smaller yards or branch lines may use simpler arrangements, sometimes just a single siding for local stock assembly.
