A tank locomotive is a steam engine designed to carry its water and fuel supplies aboard the locomotive itself, rather than in a separate tender. The boiler and engine sit directly above a frame that integrates water tanks (usually on the sides and rear) and a coal bunker, making the whole unit self-contained. This configuration emerged in the 1850s and became standard for branch lines, shunting work, and industrial railways where running a separate tender was uneconomical or the track gauge too narrow.

Tank locomotives are classified by their wheel arrangement and tank volume. A 0-6-0T designation means no leading wheels, six driving wheels, and integral tanks. Capacity typically ranged from 700 to 2,500 gallons of water and 2 to 5 tons of coal depending on the design and gauge. On narrow-gauge railways (two feet or less), tanks were proportionally smaller. The weight distribution was always critical since integral tanks shifted the center of gravity upward and backward, affecting coupling forces and braking performance on grades.

Practical use and limitations

Tank locomotives dominated branch-line work because their compact wheelbase suited poorly maintained track and tight yard layouts. They were cheaper to build and operate than a tender locomotive, and required no turntable or running shed to run in either direction. However, their limited water range (typically 20 to 40 miles at working speed) restricted them to short-haul work. On long-distance duties they were useless. Bunker capacity meant frequent coaling stops, and hot weather reduced water range as engines consumed more steam for cooling.

Common failures included water leaks in the side tanks (corroded rivets, distorted plates after derailments), coal bridge collapses in the bunker under wet conditions, and overheating of the firebox due to inadequate water circulation when tanks ran low. The rear overhang created stability problems on sharply curved track, and derailments often tore the tanks apart, stranding the engine until repair shops could cut and reweld new plating.

The term tank is simply a contraction of tank locomotive or tank engine, used throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in British and European railways. North American railroads preferred tender locomotives and used tanks mainly for industrial switching, so the vocabulary never became standard there. Tank locomotives survived well into the diesel age in some countries, but steam operations ceased almost entirely by the 1970s.
