A ground signal is a fixed railway signal standing 3 to 4 feet high, mounted at track level to control movement of trains, locomotives, or rolling stock over short distances or in confined spaces. Unlike main signals that control line traffic from a distance, ground signals issue direct stop or proceed orders to train crews working in yards, sidings, depots, and around points and crossings where conventional mast-mounted signals cannot be seen or would be impractical.
Ground signals typically use the same semaphore or colour-light technology as their taller cousins but in miniature form. Semaphore ground signals display a horizontal arm at stop and an angled arm at proceed. Colour-light versions show red for stop and green or yellow for movement. The signal head sits low enough that a driver in the cab of a shunting locomotive or short-wheelbase vehicle can see it clearly without straining or repositioning, critical when working at walking pace through congested track layouts.
Placement and application
Ground signals are positioned at track junctions, yard exits, buffer stops, and other locations where trains need precise instruction over short distances. They control movements that fall outside the main signalling system: a locomotive being released from a siding, a freight train passing through a narrow loading dock access, or a shunt move into a carriage shed. They are particularly valuable where overhead clearances prevent tall signal masts or where repeated short movements make constant main signal operation wasteful.
The term 'dwarf signal' (more common in North American railway vernacular) and 'ground signal' are used interchangeably, though 'ground signal' emphasizes its function as a rule-of-the-track instruction rather than its mere physical stature. Some railways reserve 'ground signal' for signals that control shunt moves specifically, distinguishing them from 'approach signals' or 'starting signals' on the same low platform.
Drivers must treat ground signals with the same authority as main line signals. Failure to obey one risks collision with other stock, damage to infrastructure, or breach of shunt authorization. Ground signals remain in use worldwide on traditional railway networks and are still installed in new yards and depots where clear sight lines and low-speed operations justify their cost and maintenance burden.
