This is a core discipline in carpentry and fabrication: take your measurement, write it down or mark it, then measure again before making any cut that cannot be undone. Once you cut, the piece is shortened and cannot be lengthened. A board 8 feet long cut to 7 feet 11 inches becomes scrap if you needed 8 feet.
The phrase works because cutting is fast and irreversible, while measuring takes seconds more. A carpenter measuring a doorway opening might use a tape measure twice from different reference points, or measure width at top and bottom separately, because walls are rarely perfectly plumb. A fabricator laying out hole positions on a plate will measure from the edge, then measure from an intermediate mark, then measure the distance between holes themselves. Each check catches different errors: misreading the tape, a tape that shifted, or arithmetic mistakes.
The stakes are highest with expensive material or long setup time. Cutting a piece from a full sheet of plywood or a length of hardwood that cost money means the error hits the bottom line. Fitted woodwork, such as cabinetry or millwork, compounds the problem: one wrong cut can force remake of adjacent pieces or entire assemblies. On-site work, where returning for a second pass costs time and labour, makes accuracy even more valuable.
The proverb also guards against hurried work. A carpenter under time pressure may mentally rehearse a cut but skip the second measurement, relying on the first one. Fatigue, distraction, or poor light all increase the chance that the first measurement was misread. Measuring twice enforces a pause and a mental reset.
Modern tools have not made this obsolete. A laser measure still requires you to identify the correct reference point; a digital caliper still shows a number that can be misread; a CNC machine still cuts according to the file you feed it. The principle holds: verification before commitment is cheaper than correction after the fact.
