A ridge beam is a horizontal structural member that runs the full length of a pitched roof at its peak, where the upper ends of opposing rafters meet and are fastened. In traditional framing, it serves as the primary load path for the roof assembly, collecting forces from both sides of the roof and transferring them down through posts or bearing walls to the foundation below. It is distinct from a ridge board, which is a non-structural member used only to align rafters during framing in certain roof designs.
Ridge beams are typically solid lumber, engineered lumber, or steel, sized according to roof pitch, span, load requirements, and local building codes. Common sizes range from 2x8 to 2x12 in residential work, though commercial roofs or steep pitches may require larger members or built-up beams. The beam must be oriented with its major axis vertical (standing on edge) to maximize bending strength and resist the lateral thrust created by the weight of the roof pushing the rafters outward.
Loads and failure modes
The ridge beam experiences primarily vertical bending stress from snow load, dead load of roofing materials, and live loads. In climates with heavy snow, this single member can carry several tons of force. Undersizing is the most common error; contractors sometimes confuse ridge beam with ridge board and specify inadequate material. Lateral thrust from the rafters creates horizontal forces that must be resisted; if not properly supported by posts below or tied by collar ties above, the roof can spread at the peak, causing ridge sag, cracking in exterior walls, and structural distress.
The ridge beam must be supported at both ends and at intermediate points depending on span. In most residential applications, it bears on exterior walls or on posts that extend to lower structural members. Connections matter critically: rafters must be securely fastened to the beam with nails, bolts, or hurricane ties to prevent lateral movement during wind events. Building codes specify minimum fastening requirements and typical connection details.
The terminology comes from carpentry tradition: the ridge is the apex line of the roof, and the beam is the structural timber supporting the rafter assembly at that point. This is why the distinction between ridge beam (structural) and ridge board (temporary alignment device) matters for code compliance and structural safety, even though both run along the roof peak.
