mensuration: measuring what a forest is actually worth

Mensuration is the systematic measurement and calculation of timber volumes, growth rates, and stand characteristics in forests. It answers the fundamental question every forester must ask: how much wood is there, how fast is it growing, and in what condition? The practice relies on field sampling, mathematical models, and increasingly, remote sensing data to transform raw measurements into actionable inventory information.

Core mensuration work involves measuring tree diameter at breast height (1.3 meters), total height, and species identification across sample plots distributed through a stand. From these measurements, foresters calculate individual tree volumes using species-specific allometric equations, then scale results to estimate total stand volume in cubic meters or board feet per hectare. Growth measurements taken at successive time intervals reveal periodic annual increment (PAI) and mean annual increment (MAI), which directly inform harvest scheduling and rotation age decisions.

Variants and application

Mensuration methods vary by stand type and management objective. In even-aged plantation forestry, systematic grid sampling with fixed plot sizes is standard. In natural or mixed-age stands, variable-radius sampling (angle-count cruising) often works better, where plot size adjusts based on tree size. Destructive sampling, where trees are felled and log-scaled, provides the most accurate volume data but is costly and only used for validation or in research settings. Large-scale inventory programs combine field sampling with airborne LiDAR to model stand structure across thousands of hectares.

Mensuration also captures health indicators: crown condition, pest damage, disease presence, and structural defects that reduce merchantable volume. A tree may measure 50 centimeters diameter, but extensive heartrot or multiple large branches missing reduces its actual value substantially. Professional cruisers grade logs as they estimate volume, sorting timber into quality classes that reflect market reality rather than theoretical volumes from diameter and height alone.

The name derives from Latin mensurare, to measure. It sits at the intersection of forestry, statistics, and timber commerce; poor mensuration leads to financial losses when harvesters encounter unexpected defects or when growth projections prove wildly optimistic. Precision matters because harvest decisions affecting 40-year rotations rest on measurements taken in a single season.
