Masting is the irregular, often explosive production of fruit or seed by trees in a given year, followed by years of little or no reproductive output. A mast year in oak, beech, or spruce can drop seed so heavily that the forest floor becomes carpeted, while the following two to five years may see almost nothing fall. This boom-and-bust cycle is driven by weather, tree energy reserves, and genetic programming rather than by anything a forester controls.
The term comes from Old Norse mast, meaning the fruit of forest trees, especially acorns and beechnuts that historically fed pigs. Medieval foresters valued mast years because swine could fatten on the windfall, turning woodland into livestock feed without labour. The word stuck even though modern forestry thinks about masting very differently.
Masting happens across temperate tree species but varies wildly in trigger and timing. Oaks in one region may mast in year three while beech in another masts on a seven-year cycle. Climatic factors play a role, particularly temperature and moisture during flower bud formation in the previous summer and autumn. Trees appear to synchronise masting within local populations, possibly through pollen stress or chemical signalling, though the exact mechanism remains debated.
Why this matters to timber and land managers
Mast years create practical headaches. Heavy seed fall clogs streams, damages young plantations buried under nuts, and attracts seed-eating wildlife that may then strip seedlings elsewhere. Foresters trying to establish regeneration face either timing plantations to avoid mast years or accepting seedling loss. Conversely, mast years can regenerate forest naturally and expensively without planting, which foresters may welcome or resent depending on stocking goals.
Wildlife ecologists watch masting closely because boom years support population spikes in jays, squirrels, and other seed consumers, with population crashes following lean years.
