The composition, features, or appearance of a portion of a facies small enough to be examined in thin sections, or in rock samples of similar size.

A microfacies is the mineralogical and textural character of a rock sample visible only through a microscope or magnifying glass, typically at 10x to 100x magnification. In mining and petroleum geology, it describes the small-scale features of a rock unit: grain size, shape, sorting, cementation, fossil content, and mineral composition. A single geological formation may contain many distinct microfacies, each telling a precise story about depositional environment, diagenesis, or mineralization history.
Geologists examine microfacies in thin sections, polished slices of rock 0.03 mm thick mounted on glass slides. Under transmitted or reflected light microscopy, these sections reveal crystal boundaries, pore structure, alteration minerals, and textural relationships invisible to the naked eye. In ore deposit work, microfacies analysis identifies the specific minerals carrying economic metal content, their relationships to gangue minerals, and the processes that concentrated them. A copper porphyry deposit, for example, may show distinct microfacies zones defined by grain size, vein density, and sulfide mineralogy at different distances from the intrusion.
Microfacies versus facies
Facies describes the overall character of a rock unit observable at outcrop or core-log scale, reflecting depositional setting or structural domain. Microfacies is its microscopic expression, providing the diagnostic detail that proves or refines facies interpretation. A hand sample called sandstone facies becomes several microfacies when thin-sectioned: quartzose microfacies with well-sorted grains; feldspathic microfacies with fresh feldspar; or phyllosilicate-rich microfacies with clay-matrix support. These distinctions control porosity, permeability, and ore grade.
Microfacies analysis is essential in exploration. When drilling intersects a narrow interval, thin section examination determines whether it represents a barren wall-rock microfacies or a mineralized microfacies worth further drilling. In sedimentary basins, microfacies sequences constrain paleodepth, paleoclimate, and sand geometry. In metamorphic terrain, microfacies documents mineral assemblages that lock in pressure-temperature conditions. The term carries no fixed scale; what matters is that individual microfacies are small enough to fit a thin section and large enough to be representative.
Systematic microfacies description follows standardized conventions: primary minerals are listed first by abundance; texture is stated (porphyritic, granular, laminated); alteration and weathering are noted; fossils or inclusions are identified. A microfacies description becomes part of the permanent geological log, available for correlation with other drill holes and for modeling spatial variation in rock properties. Microfacies boundaries often do not coincide with core-log boundaries or visual drill cuttings changes, so their recognition requires methodical thin-section work.
