A crosscut is a horizontal access tunnel driven perpendicular to the strike of a mineral vein or ore body. Unlike a level, which follows the vein itself, a crosscut cuts through surrounding country rock to connect parallel workings, reach a vein from a main haulage way, or establish new access routes through the mine. The term describes both the direction of drive and the purpose: to cut across rather than along.

In hard rock mining, crosscuts connect the main gangway to individual stope blocks, allowing ore and waste to move separately from the haulage route. A mine might drive crosscuts at regular intervals, typically every 30 to 50 meters along the gangway, depending on vein width and mining geometry. In coal mining, crosscuts serve similar purposes, linking the main entry with working sections. The rock between the vein and crosscut is waste material that must be moved and supported.

Crosscut driving is slower and more expensive than stoping because it creates no ore. The work involves drilling, blasting, mucking, and installing temporary or permanent support in often weak country rock. Crosscuts through water-bearing strata may require dewatering systems. Poor ground conditions can cause overbreak, where the tunnel expands beyond designed dimensions, requiring extra support timber or rockbolts and increasing costs significantly.

The name reflects the literal geometry: a cut across the grain of the mine plan. Historical mine plans show crosscuts as perpendicular lines connecting the sinuous trace of a level or vein. In modern terminology, a crosscut distinguished from a raise (driven upward) and a decline (driven downward). The term has remained consistent across mining regions and centuries because the function is universal.

Ventilation, personnel safety, and production scheduling depend on an adequate crosscut network. A mine with too few crosscuts creates bottlenecks and poor air circulation; excessive crosscutting wastes capital and time. Experienced mine planners calculate crosscut spacing to balance access, ventilation, and cost. The spacing also affects pillar design in coal mines, where crosscuts define block geometry for room and pillar extraction.
