A midengine layout positions the internal combustion engine or motor between the front and rear wheels, rather than ahead of the front axle (front engine) or behind the rear axle (rear engine). The engine bay occupies the center of the chassis, typically behind the driver and passenger compartment. This arrangement has profound effects on weight distribution, handling, and package efficiency.
The defining advantage is near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution front to rear. A midengine car naturally resists both understeer and oversteer, making it more forgiving at the limit. Cooling ducts must route air to radiators mounted at the front or sides, adding complexity to bodywork design. Transverse midengine layouts, common in high performance cars, mount the gearbox beside the engine to reduce longitudinal length.
Trade-offs and practical limits
Midengine design sacrifices interior space, particularly rear legroom, since the engine occupies volume that would otherwise house passengers or cargo. Service access becomes restricted; major work often requires partial engine removal. Longer transmission tunnels and complex cooling ducting increase manufacturing cost significantly compared to conventional front engine layouts.
Midengine configurations became popular in racing and exotic sports cars because of superior handling dynamics on track. Road cars adopting this layout, such as purpose-built sports cars and some high-end production vehicles, accept the packaging penalties in exchange for precision steering response and balanced cornering. The term appears most often in marketing materials for performance vehicles, where the layout is advertised as a competitive advantage.
Contemporary electric vehicles sometimes adopt midengine or mid-mounted motor arrangements because electric motors are smaller and lighter than combustion engines, making the space trade-off less severe. However, traditional midengine cars remain almost exclusively petrol-powered sports cars, supercars, and racing machines where the handling benefit justifies the cost and complexity.
