A milepost is a fixed marker installed along highways, railways, and major roads to indicate distance from a reference point, typically the start of the route or a significant junction. Traditional mileposts are posts or pillars, often made of stone, concrete, or cast iron, standing 3 to 4 feet above ground. They display numerals showing the distance in miles traveled along that corridor, and many carry additional fingerposts with directional information and place names.
On highways, mileposts serve critical functions for emergency response, law enforcement, and logistics. When a driver calls for roadside assistance or to report an accident, the milepost number provides precise location data without requiring GPS coordinates or verbal descriptions of landscape features. Transport operators use mileposts to track vehicle position, plan rest stops, and measure route segments. On divided highways, mileposts typically run along both directions, with odd numbers on one side and even on the other, eliminating confusion about which direction a reported incident occurred.
Variants and placement
Railway mileposts are simpler, usually small cast-iron or stone markers set flush or slightly proud of the ground beside the track, numbered continuously from a designated origin. Older road mileposts in Britain were sometimes topped with a crown symbol or coat of arms. Modern highway markers increasingly include reflective elements or electronic components for automated vehicle tracking systems. In metric countries, the equivalent marker is called a kilometer post, graduated at 1 km intervals instead of 1.6 km.
Spacing and numbering conventions vary by jurisdiction and era. Early turnpike roads in Britain reset numbering at toll gates; modern highways typically number continuously from a consistent origin point. Mileposts on US Interstate Highways align with the mile marker system, where the number also indicates distance from a state border or the western/southern terminus of the route. This dual function makes them invaluable for pinpointing locations in dispatch situations.
The term derives directly from its function: a post marking each mile of distance. Although GPS and digital navigation have reduced reliance on physical markers for route planning, mileposts remain standard infrastructure on major roads because they provide location data that persists independently of electronic systems and require no power or connectivity to be useful in an emergency.
