Miner's moss is a fibrous mat placed on the floor of a sluice box to capture fine gold and other heavy minerals as water carries paydirt across it. The material works by creating thousands of tiny pockets and irregularities that slow and trap particles heavier than the surrounding sediment and water. As the slurry flows over the moss, gold, platinum, and other dense minerals settle into the weave while lighter sand and clay wash downstream.

The most effective miner's moss is made from coarse wool felt or synthetic fibers with an open, rough texture. Traditional versions used actual moss or coconut fiber, which gave the material its name and are still occasionally employed in small-scale operations. Modern synthetic alternatives, typically polyester or polypropylene blends, offer better durability and easier cleaning. The thickness typically ranges from one-half inch to one inch, providing enough depth for minerals to lodge without creating excessive backpressure that would dam the sluice.

Placement and recovery

Miner's moss is laid directly on the riffles or the floor of the sluice box, sometimes in layers or sections that can be removed for processing. Gold particles as fine as flour will lodge in quality moss, which makes it especially valuable for recovering fine gold that would escape through riffle boards alone. The moss must be positioned so water flows through it evenly; uneven placement creates dead zones where material accumulates without being processed.

Recovering material from moss requires careful work. The moss is removed from the sluice, and gold is extracted by gentle panning or washing the fibers in a separate vessel. Poor maintenance ruins effectiveness: moss clogged with clay and silt no longer traps minerals efficiently and must be cleaned or replaced. In high-volume operations, miners rotate multiple moss sections through the sluice so cleaning happens offline without stopping production.

Miner's moss appears in both placer mining and in laboratory or small-scale recovery work. It is cost-effective relative to the gold it recovers and requires no power or mechanical parts, making it standard equipment even where sluices are otherwise automated. The trade name reflects its organic origins, though few modern miners use actual moss.
