A mine car is a wheeled vehicle running on fixed rails, designed to move broken rock, ore, coal, or waste from the working face to the shaft or surface. The fundamental job is simple: shift bulk material in confined spaces where trucks cannot go. Most mine cars are open-top boxes mounted on two or four axles, with wheels that grip or sit on steel rails typically spaced 24 to 36 inches apart, depending on the mine and the era of installation.

The two dominant types are gravity cars and motorized cars. Gravity cars, still common in metallic ore mines, rely on slopes and manual or cable-braking descent. A loaded car coasting downhill is slowed by friction wheels or mechanical brakes operated by the operator; empty cars return to the face either powered or hauled. Motorized mine cars carry electric or diesel engines and run on level or near-level tracks, pulling one or more trailing cars behind. The motor is compact, usually slung below or beside the frame to keep the load space clear.

Capacity ranges from 2 to 12 tons per car in hard-rock mines; coal cars can handle similar loads but are often smaller due to the bulk density of coal and cramped passage heights. Steel is the standard material for frames and bodies, though the wheels themselves may be cast steel with integral flanges or chilled iron to resist wear. A set of rails in continuous use will wear a polished groove; the flange on the wheel keeps it from slipping sideways even on curves, and derailment is a standing hazard in wet conditions or when track is damaged.

Mine cars are pushed or pulled by cable systems, battery locomotives, or diesel engines. The operator sits in an exposed cab or walks alongside, using levers or electrical controls to engage and release the drive. The coupling between cars is usually a simple link or hook to allow rapid disconnect at the dump site or loading station. Brake systems vary: older gravity cars use friction wheels that grip the rail on descent, while motorized cars use drum brakes or disc brakes on the axles. Maintenance is relentless because mud, ore dust, and dampness corrode steel and clog moving parts.

The term mine car is largely North American; the British prefer mine tub or pit truck, and Europeans may use mine wagon. The name reflects simple geography: these are cars designed for mines, distinguished from railroad cars by their smaller wheels, lower-clearance frames, and purpose-built couplings. A mine car is effectively a rail container, and its design has changed little in principle since the 18th century, though materials and braking have improved. Any modern hard-rock or coal mine operating underground rail transport will have dozens of these in active service, with more in repair or storage.
