Liquefied natural gas is methane and other hydrocarbons cooled to approximately minus 162 degrees Celsius (minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit), at which point the gas becomes a liquid occupying roughly 1/600th of its original volume. This compression allows economical transport across oceans in specialized tanker vessels, where mines and extraction operations in remote locations can reach distant markets.
The cooling process, called liquefaction, involves removing water vapor and heavier hydrocarbons before chilling the gas through heat exchangers and expansion turbines. The resulting liquid sits just above its boiling point and must be kept insulated to prevent boil-off during storage and transport. On-shore LNG plants require enormous cooling infrastructure; a typical facility processes gas from multiple wells and can produce 4 to 5 million tons per year.
LNG carriers are the only practical way to move the product long distances. These ships have heavily insulated cargo tanks, often with a membrane or self-supporting design, and carry loads of 100,000 to 266,000 cubic meters. When LNG reaches a receiving terminal at its destination, it is regasified by heating through seawater heat exchangers or other sources, then distributed via pipeline to power plants, industries, and domestic users.
The economic advantage of LNG over pipeline transport becomes apparent at distances beyond 2,000 to 3,000 kilometers, which is why the industry grew as a way to monetize stranded gas reserves in places like Australia, Qatar, and Timor-Leste. Capital costs for liquefaction plants are substantial, typically ranging from several billion dollars, so projects require long-term sales contracts to justify investment.
Safety and operational challenges include the risk of boil-off, temperature management during transport, regasification logistics, and the need for specialized infrastructure at both ends of the supply chain. LNG is traded as a commodity with contracts indexed to crude oil prices or regional gas benchmarks, making it integral to global energy security and geopolitical supply arrangements.
