In lace manufacture, a mode is a small decorative motif or separate piece of lace that is sewn or tied into the ground fabric of a larger lace design. Unlike the main pattern, which forms the structural backbone of the piece, modes are applied elements that add visual richness and break up large empty areas without requiring the lace maker to work through those spaces with needle or bobbin. They serve both aesthetic and practical purposes, reducing the labour needed to fill certain zones while creating focal points.
Modes are constructed independently before insertion. In bobbin lace work, a mode might be a small rosette, leaf, or geometric cluster made on a separate section of the pillow or loom, then cut free and attached to the main ground once complete. In needle lace production, modes are often made as separate pieces using a loom or frame, then stitched in place by hand. The attachment point must be secure enough to survive wear and cleaning, which typically means using a fine thread that blends with the surrounding lace.
Placement and effect vary according to design. A designer might position modes at regular intervals along a border, scatter them across a field of open ground to create visual texture, or cluster them at corners and intersections for emphasis. The contrast between a delicate ground and a denser, more ornate mode creates the characteristic visual punch that many lace patterns require, particularly in 19th and 20th century production lace destined for fashion or domestic furnishing.
The technique appears in both hand-made and machine-made lace, though the economics differ. In hand production, modes reduce tedious repetition and allow pattern designers to create complexity without proportional increases in making time. In industrial lace curtain manufacture and Jacquard loom work, modes are programmed into the weave structure or inserted mechanically, becoming part of the systematic design rather than a separate attachment process.
Quality and durability of modes depend on secure attachment and material compatibility. A mode made from thread of different weight or fibre type than the ground can cause uneven wear, pulling, or visible deterioration over time. Professional lace makers match thread thickness, fibre content, and dye lots carefully when inserting modes, particularly for high-value work. Poorly executed modes may come loose, creating a visible defect that reduces the commercial value of the finished piece.
