tee: the unisex cotton staple that outlasted fashion

A tee is a short-sleeved, round-necked pullover shirt, typically made from knitted cotton or cotton-blend fabric. The name comes from its T-shaped form when laid flat: a vertical torso panel with two sleeves extending perpendicular at the shoulders. The garment became standard workwear across manufacturing plants, warehouses, and construction sites because it is cheap to produce, easy to launder, and leaves arms free for labour.

In manufacturing settings, tees are usually single-jersey or rib-knit constructions with weights ranging from 150 to 200 grams per square meter. The lighter weights (140, 160 gsm) are preferred for warm environments or summer wear; heavier versions (180, 200 gsm) provide durability and opacity. Most industrial-grade tees use open-end spun yarn rather than ring-spun, since the cost saving outweighs minor loss in smoothness. Neck finishes vary between crew neck (most common), V-neck, and henley-style buttons.

Factories produce tees in organized production runs, often for corporate branding or safety identification. A single dye lot might involve bleaching raw cotton fabric, reactive or pigment dyeing in large vats, singeing to remove surface fuzz, and final shrinkage control to hold dimensional tolerance. Sleeve length, armhole depth, and body length are adjusted per sizing grade; European and North American grading systems differ slightly in chest measurements and overall proportions.

Common problems and variants

Pilling occurs when loose fibres ball up on the surface during wear and washing, especially in lower-quality open-end yarn. Shrinkage remains a persistent issue despite pre-shrinking; many tees still shrink 2 to 5 percent after the first wash. Colour fastness varies with dye type and substrate; reds and dark blues are notoriously prone to bleeding. For industrial use, reinforced neck seams and box-stitched shoulder seams reduce tearing at stress points.

The tee sits at the foundation of casual workwear. It is neither formal nor specialist protective equipment, yet it is ubiquitous enough that most manufacturing workers own several. Safety-critical environments favour high-visibility versions with reflective tape or flame-retardant treatments, but the basic tee remains the default layer under heavier outerwear or worn alone in warm conditions.
