A massive structure, usually of stone, used as a pier, breakwater or junction between places separated by water.

A mole is a robust masonry or concrete structure built into water to serve as a pier, breakwater, or fixed crossing point. In shipyard and harbor work, it functions as permanent infrastructure, not a temporary platform. The structure typically consists of a core of rubble or quarried stone, faced with larger blocks or cut stone on the seaward side, and topped with a working deck of timber, concrete, or steel plating. Smaller moles may be simple rubble filled with timber cribbing; larger ones require driven piles, caissons, or rock fill stabilized by wave action or deliberate compaction.

The mole's primary purpose is to create a sheltered anchorage or mooring basin by breaking wave action and swell, or to extend a wharf into deeper water for cargo handling and ship access. A mole differs from a simple wharf because it is massive enough to function as a structural breakwater in its own right, not merely as a jetty or platform attached to the shore. Many harbor moles are designed as L or T-shaped structures, with the stem providing shelter and the head offering working berths for vessels on both sides.

Construction and maintenance challenges

Mole construction requires careful attention to seabed preparation, wave loading, and settlement. Stone or concrete units must be graded and placed so the structure can absorb or deflect storm energy without overturning or allowing wave runup to damage the deck. Backfill materials settle over time, requiring periodic top-up and compaction. The interface between the mole face and the seabed is vulnerable to scour, especially where tidal or wind-driven currents accelerate around the structure. Corrosion of any embedded steel fittings, reinforcement, or mooring hardware requires cathodic protection or regular replacement in saltwater environments.

The term mole derives from the Latin moles, meaning a massive structure or heap. In older maritime usage, it sometimes referred to any solid barrier built into water; the shipyard sense has narrowed to mean a substantial, permanent, wave-resistant structure. In some ports, the term is used loosely for any major pier or dock that extends seaward, but strict usage reserves it for structures whose primary function is breakwater action and whose massiveness is essential to their purpose.

Modern moles in busy shipyards and container terminals often incorporate fender systems (rubber or foam bumpers) to protect moored vessels, and fendering dolphins or guide piles to assist maneuvering large ships. The working surface may include rail tracks for cranes, cable trays for shore power, or pipeline supports for bunkering and freshwater supply. Life cycle costs for a mole are high because maintenance, scour protection, and refacing can extend over decades, making the choice between a mole and alternative harbor structures (such as floating breakwaters or moored pontoons) a significant investment decision in harbor engineering.
