mouldboard plough: the soil-turner that defines primary tillage

A mouldboard plough is a ground-engaging tool pulled behind a tractor or animal that cuts a furrow, lifts the soil layer, and inverts it to bury surface vegetation and improve seedbed preparation. The distinctive curved metal surface, the mouldboard itself, does the turning work; soil slides up and over it, landing inverted in the previous furrow. This single-pass operation remains the standard primary tillage method on millions of hectares worldwide, despite competition from reduced-tillage systems.

The working parts are few but essential. A coulter or disc knife cuts vertically through the soil ahead of the share, which is a hardened steel blade that undercuts the soil layer. The mouldboard, typically made from cast steel or ductile iron, curves upward and backward in a helical shape; this geometry matters enormously because it determines how violently the soil is turned and how much power the plough demands. Deeper mouldboards (which curve through a larger arc) invert soil more completely but require more draft. Shallower boards turn soil less aggressively and suit stony ground better. The furrow width typically ranges from 25 to 40 centimetres on conventional models, and working depth from 15 to 25 centimetres.

Design variants and their trade-offs

General-purpose mouldboards suit mixed farming but handle neither adhesive clay nor very stony soil well. Semi-digger designs have a steeper mouldboard angle and a higher share, cutting deeper and turning soil more completely; they demand 30 to 50 percent more power and suit heavy soils. Digger ploughs are extreme versions with nearly vertical mouldboards and are now uncommon except in specialist work. Landside wear, especially in abrasive soils, requires hardening or replaceable segments. A cracked or bent mouldboard cannot be economically repaired and must be replaced as an assembly.

Soil conditions determine performance and wear rates sharply. Clay soils wet enough to stick cause severe scouring and power loss; dry clay becomes brick-hard and wears the mouldboard intensely. Sandy soils with low cohesion slip past the mouldboard if the angle is too shallow, while stony ground can fracture the share or mouldboard if it catches a large stone. Operating depth must often be compromised on stony land to avoid damage.

The mouldboard plough has been mechanized incrementally but not fundamentally changed since the nineteenth century. Hydraulic depth control and adjustable widths came later, but the physics of soil movement over a curved surface remain unchanged. Reversible ploughs (with two mouldboards, one facing left and one right) eliminate the need to drive back down the field, improving work rate by 10 to 15 percent on rectangular fields. Conservation-minded operators increasingly favour reduced-tillage or no-till alternatives, which preserve soil structure and organic matter, but the mouldboard plough remains unmatched for breaking new ground or burying stubble effectively in one pass.
