Any material used to cover the top layer of soil to protect, insulate, or decorate it, or to discourage weeds or retain moisture.

Mulch is any material spread across exposed soil surface to alter its behavior: controlling moisture loss, moderating temperature swings, suppressing weed germination, or improving appearance. Industrial and commercial operations deploy mulch at scales from landscape beds to erosion control on construction sites, where it reduces dust, retains water in dry climates, and stabilizes exposed embankments. The material sits between bare earth and air, creating a physical and chemical barrier that changes how the soil environment functions.

Common mulch materials fall into two broad categories: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches include bark chips (pine, hardwood, or cedar), wood fiber, shredded leaves, straw, compost, and sawdust; these break down over months or years, adding humus and improving soil structure. Inorganic mulches include gravel, river rock, recycled asphalt, landscape fabric, and rubber chips from tire recycling; these persist unchanged and work by physical suppression alone. Choice depends on climate, intended lifespan, soil chemistry, and cost. A bark mulch layer of 2 to 4 inches serves most purposes; deeper layers can create anaerobic conditions near the soil surface.

Industrial mulch production turns waste streams into usable material. Wood processing generates bark and sawdust; demolition and land clearing produce chipped wood; tire recycling yields rubber granules. Equipment ranges from drum chippers and horizontal grinders to trommel screens for sizing. Bulk mulch is sold by the cubic yard and delivered loose by truck, or sometimes in bagged form for smaller projects. Regional suppliers often source locally available waste, so mulch composition varies by geography and season.

Trade-offs and failure modes

Organic mulches require replacement every 2 to 5 years as they decompose; cedar and cypress last longer than pine. Fresh wood mulch can temporarily tie up soil nitrogen during decomposition, requiring supplemental feeding in planting beds. Improperly applied mulch (piled against tree stems or trunks) creates moisture pockets that invite fungal disease and bark rot. Mulch also provides habitat for pests and can harbor pathogens if sourced from diseased material. Color-dyed mulches are aesthetically persistent but depend on synthetic pigments that eventually fade.

Inorganic mulches avoid decomposition but offer no soil amendment; they reflect and retain more heat in summer, which can stress shallow-rooted plants in hot climates. Rock mulch in permeable landscape fabric prevents weed germination but allows soil to compact; fabric alone must be checked regularly for puncture and creep. Recycled rubber poses environmental questions around leachate and offgassing, particularly in food production zones. Cost per unit area is lower for mulch than for sod or other living cover, making it economical for erosion control, site stabilization, and commercial landscaping at scale.
