A tractor is a wheeled or tracked vehicle built to deliver high torque at low speed, designed to pull implements or carry loads across unprepared ground. Unlike trucks, which prioritize payload and highway performance, tractors prioritize drawbar pull and ground clearance. The engine, typically diesel, is mounted low and centered over the rear axle to maximize traction and weight distribution to the driving wheels.
Farm tractors range from 20 to over 300 horsepower, with power take-off (PTO) shafts running at 540 or 1000 rpm to drive hay balers, grain augers, and rotary tillers. The three-point hitch, standardized by ISO 730, allows quick coupling of implements at the rear. Hydraulic systems operate the hitch, steering assistance, and external cylinders on attached equipment. Ground clearance beneath the frame often exceeds two feet to allow operation over growing crops without damage.
Variants and power sources
Utility tractors (35 to 80 hp) handle row-crop work and general farm tasks. Row-crop models have narrow front axles and high clearance over the center of the field. Compact tractors (15 to 35 hp) suit small operations and landscaping. Large articulated four-wheel-drive models exceed 200 hp and use a pivot joint between front and rear frames for tighter turning in soft ground. Loader tractors mount a front-end bucket and grapple for material handling. Most modern farm tractors burn diesel; LPG and gasoline models still operate in older fleets.
The term tractor comes from Latin trahere, to pull. Before mechanical tractors, the word described any pulling animal. Tire selection matters greatly: broad, low-pressure agricultural tires distribute weight and maintain grip in mud, while smaller turf tires protect grass. Ballast weights inside the rear wheels increase traction and prevent tipping when pulling heavy loads or operating on slopes.
Failures typically involve hydraulic leaks from worn hose fittings, engine overheating during peak season, transmission slip under sustained load, and fuel gelling in winter without treated diesel. Maintenance intervals depend on load hours, not calendar time. A tractor that pulls field implements eight hours daily will need engine oil and filter changes far sooner than an idle machine. The tractor sits at the center of farm mechanization, a tool whose versatility and durability define profitability in seasons with tight windows for planting and harvest.
