A structure is nail sick when its nails have corroded, lost grip, or failed to the point where the fastening integrity is compromised. This term appears across three major trades: building carpentry, roofing, and ship construction. The condition is not merely cosmetic; it represents a structural liability. Rust expanding in the nail shaft can split timber. Corrosion can reduce a nail's tensile strength by 50 percent or more. Loss of fastening means load transfer fails at critical joints.

The problem manifests differently by context. In roof framing, nail sick connections allow rafters to shift under wind or snow load, opening gaps in the structure. In external cladding, corroded nails can no longer hold boards tight, allowing them to cup, warp, or separate. In ship hulls, deteriorated fasteners allow planking to work, admitting water and stress. The iron oxide (rust) produced by ferrous nails expands as it forms, eventually creating enough pressure to crack surrounding timber or loosen the grip.

Nail sickness accelerates when ferrous nails are driven into timber exposed to moisture and salt air. Coastal buildings and maritime structures are most vulnerable. Driven fasteners that miss their seat slightly, creating a small gap between nail head and timber surface, will corrode faster because water pools around the nail shaft. Galvanizing or coating can slow the process but does not eliminate it entirely. Copper and silicon bronze nails resist corrosion far better but cost substantially more and are less common in routine construction.

Inspection for nail sickness requires looking for surface rust staining around nail heads, checking for soft spots in timber adjacent to fasteners, and listening for movement when loading the structure. In timber framing, a nail sick joint will sometimes creak audibly under live load. Professional assessment often involves probing suspect areas with an awl or screwdriver to detect soft wood fibers. The condition is progressive; if not addressed, it worsens with each seasonal moisture cycle.

The term itself is part of a family of sick descriptions in construction: rot sick (decayed), worm sick (infested), and dry sick (structurally compromised but still standing). Nail sick is distinctly about fastener failure rather than the timber itself, though the two often occur together in older or poorly maintained buildings. Remediation typically requires re-fastening with sound nails or bolts, though structural engineers may demand replacement of affected timber sections if corrosion has damaged the wood.
