Galletting is the practice of pressing small stone fragments, typically flint chips or slate slivers, into the mortar joints of masonry while the mortar is still wet. The fragments are tapped flush with the surrounding faces, creating a textured, stippled appearance across the joint lines. This technique is found chiefly in rubble stone and random coursed masonry, where it serves both practical and aesthetic purposes.

The primary function is to lock the masonry together mechanically. In walls built from irregularly shaped rubble, mortar joints can be thick and uneven. By embedding hard stone fragments into these joints, the mason reduces the volume of pure mortar and creates interlocking points that resist movement and improve shear strength. This is particularly valuable in older construction where lime mortar is weaker than modern cements.

Flint galletting was most common in regions where flint occurred naturally, such as Norfolk, Sussex, and other parts of southeastern England. Slate was used in areas with slate deposits. The fragments are typically between 10 and 40 millimetres across. The mason works quickly after laying stones, pressing chips into the still-soft mortar with a pointing tool or hammer, ensuring they sit firmly without protruding. The technique demands skill: chips that are driven too deep disappear into the joint; those left proud will break away or create weak points.

Galletting also reduces weathering of exposed mortar by leaving less pure mortar at the surface where rain and frost can attack it. The harder stone fragments weather more slowly than lime mortar and provide a tougher protective layer. Over centuries, this contributes measurably to the durability of the wall.

The term derives from gallet, a stone chip or pebble, related to Old French galet. The practice appears in medieval work but became systematic and widespread during the 17th and 18th centuries. Modern conservation work on historic buildings often involves careful repointing that respects or restores original galletting patterns, making it essential knowledge for heritage masons and conservation specialists.
