cope and stick
A frame-and-panel joinery technique used to make doors, wainscoting, etc., involving a molded edge with a cut along the inside of the frame where it is to be joined to the panel. The panel piece that meets the molding at a right angle must be "coped", or given a cope cut, across the end grain of the wood to match the molding's profile.

Cope and stick is a joinery method for assembling frame-and-panel doors and wainscoting where the frame rails and stiles are molded, and the panels float freely within them. The frame pieces are cut with a stick profile, a continuous molding routed or shaped into the inner edge. Where two frame members meet at right angles, the end grain of the horizontal rail is cut to match the molding's contour; this end-grain cut is the cope. The panel itself, usually solid wood, sits unglued in a groove routed just behind the stick, allowing it to expand and contract with humidity without splitting the door.
The stick profile can range from a simple roundover to ornate dentil or ogee moldings. The cope cut must precisely mirror the stick's shape, which is why most production shops use carbide shaper cutters specifically ground as cope-and-stick pairs. A single shaper head cuts the stick into the frame's inner edge; a separate cope cutter, usually of inverse profile, shapes the rail ends. Mismatched or dull cutters produce a gap at the joint, allowing the panel to rattle and admitting moisture.
Where it lives in the trade
Cope and stick dominates custom cabinetry and architectural millwork because it produces solid wood doors that are stable and appear frame-and-panel on all sides. Interior doors, cabinet faces, wainscoting, and built-in shelving commonly use this technique. The alternative, cope and stick's simpler cousin stick-only joinery, saves labor but creates a visible groove on the outside face. High-end work and period-correct restoration almost always specify true cope and stick.
Common problems include rail-end tearout during the cope cut on figured grain, which weakens the glue joint and stresses the panel seating. Panel binding occurs when wood movement is restricted by an undersized groove; panels should have 0.125 to 0.25 inch side clearance in the groove depending on panel width. Undersized or loose cope cuts cause telegraphing, where the frame's joint line becomes visible on the painted door surface as the panel moves behind it.
The term "cope" derives from an old carpentry meaning to cut a piece to fit against an existing shape; in joinery it describes cutting to match a molding's profile. "Stick" simply names the molded edge itself. The method has been used since the 18th century but became standardized in production woodworking once carbide cutters and spindle shapers became common in the 20th century.
