Narrow gauge describes any railway track with a distance between the inner edges of the rails less than 4 feet 8.5 inches (1435 mm), the standard gauge used across most of North America, Europe, and Australia. The most common narrow gauges in industrial use are 3 feet (914 mm), 2 feet 6 inches (762 mm), and meter gauge (1000 mm). A narrow gauge railway is a complete system: locomotives, rolling stock, and infrastructure all sized to match the reduced track width.

Narrow gauge appeared throughout the 19th and 20th centuries because it cost less to build and operate than standard gauge lines. Lighter rails, smaller earthworks, and tighter curves reduced capital investment and maintenance. This made narrow gauge practical for branch lines, mining operations, plantation railways, and mountainous terrain where standard gauge would have been prohibitively expensive. In industrial settings, narrow gauge still serves quarries, forests, and isolated sites where the volume of traffic does not justify a standard gauge investment.

Variants and Applications

Three-foot gauge dominated in the American South and parts of India. Two-foot 6-inch gauge was preferred in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Meter gauge became standard in much of continental Europe, Latin America, and India alongside broader standard gauge networks. Industrial operations often chose based on local availability of used rolling stock and rails rather than engineering optimization. Some systems mixed gauges within a single operation, using transfer tables or portable wagons to move cargo between networks.

The practical friction between narrow and standard gauge lies in the need for gauge conversion infrastructure: sidings with transshipment points, transfer tables, or vehicles equipped to run on both gauges. This overhead made economic sense only where traffic volume justified it. Where narrow gauge railways have survived into the modern era, they are typically heritage operations, tourist railways, or specialized industrial systems such as those found in sugar mills or remote mining camps.

The term narrow gauge is comparative, not absolute. It emerged only after standard gauge became dominant. Earlier railways used many different track widths; calling 3 feet narrow only makes sense against the 4 feet 8.5 inches that came to define the standard. In countries where meter gauge is the national norm, a 3-foot gauge line would technically be narrow, yet the distinction carries little practical weight on the ground.
